Triangle Schools, Colleges and Universities
Public and Private The Triangle offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for everyone. There are three major research universities, many liberal arts institutions and several community colleges provide opportunities for students of all interests and all ages.
This Triangle area was affectionately known as the land of tees, trees and Ph D's long before there was what is now known as the Research Triangle Park (RTP). That's because this area is not only a big education center, it's a big golf center. We are only a little over an hour's drive from Pinehurst, The Golf Capital of the World. And you won't drive very far inside the city limits or just outside the cities of Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill without going by several championship golf courses. The trend, as is done over most of the country, is to develop subdivision for homes connected to the golf courses and most have lakes along with the gorgeous trees and green, green fairways. Many of these developments have a wide variety of styles, sizes and price range homes. Also many of the subdivision have a variety of types to choose from: condos, town homes and single family homes ' some with a very wide range in price.
Here we have some of the highest ranking schools in the Southeast and the nation. Year by year student scores have been increasing, and our Governor has made a public commitment to carry on previous Governor Jim Hunt's mandate to make education a top priority.
We not only have a large number of high ranking public schools, but we have magnet schools and charter schools as well. Add to that the fine private schools and the growing home-schools and you will have no problem finding the right educational opportunities for your child.
The Wake County Public School System Serves Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Morrisville and Wake Forest. The system is comprised of over 120 schools (78 elementary, 23 middle, 16 high and 4 special/alternative), with new ones being planned and built at this time. This system includes both traditional and magnet programs. The magnet programs, which are designed to provide advanced studies for promising students, encompass such areas of study as creative arts, sciences, international studies, classical studies, foreign languages, statistics, engineering, dance and ballet. A number of schools in the area have gone to a year-round program, offering a more balanced approach to families and overcoming the 'summer gap' that leaves so many students behind at the beginning of a traditional school year.
Special Needs: Several schools offer programs for special needs children, including the Governor Morehead School for the Blind, Shelley School Child Development Center, United Cerebral Palsy Development Center and several others.
The Durham County Public School System Serves Durham County Residents With 44 Schools and 29,000 students. They are focused on providing a high quality education to all the students and have 8 magnet schools, 4 year-round elementary schools and a number of other specialized programs to address student needs.
And when your child The colleges and universities in this area were the drawing card to develop the Research Triangle Park to this area because of so many labs, etc., needed as research facilities to begin with when the idea first took hold. is ready to enter college, we have six colleges and universities as well as a number of community and technical colleges a close distance from most neighborhoods.
The Triangle is formed by the joining of three unique communities: Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. These three geographic points originally referenced the area within the parameters of three major area universities ' Duke University in Durham, North Carolina State University in Raleigh and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The colleges and universities in this area were the drawing card to develop the Research Triangle Park to this area back when the idea of a research center to be located here first came into being. This is because the many labs and other facilities as needed for research was already located close by and so handy for the purpose of developing the 'Park.'
We have always been proud of our educational institutions. The growth brought on by the Research Triangle Park (RTP) here in this has fueled growth to the extent that we have been able to develop the very highest levels of education you will find anywhere. You will find that this area has a large number of public schools, private schools, and magnet schools. There are also six colleges and universities here in this Triangle area.
